An excellent book, well written! I admit I bought the book because Mr McEwen moved into my apartment building and the Concierge told me about it. My thought was that this book would be OK, however I was very pleasantly surprised at how the story kept me engaged. I read it over a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only negative is a part of the story that jumps ahead in time at one point with actions that do not have back-up. How did these things happen? I don't want to give it away. Regardless, I highly recommend the book.It is a story about love, survival, betrayal, desire, intelligence and intrigue. It is a story that still happens today perhaps to a lesser degree. It is riveting and engrossing. Gregory McEwan is an excellent writer and I look forward to future books written by him.

I Am Kairu edition by Gregory McEwan R Tilley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Canadian author Gregory McEwan was born in the Caribbean and writes sensitively about social issues. But even in this day when racial issues, gender altering and same sex issues are front page fodder, few writers have been able to develop a story as intuitive as I AM KAIRU – a book that reaches far beyond boundaries once prohibiting exploration - and has created a character and a view of life that should make this particular book of his gain awards and attention.
Ingeniously written, I AM KAIRU tells of an African lad who, according to Gregory’s synopsis, ‘Kairu is eleven years old and is making his way with his father towards a destination unknown to him. The prospect of the long journey excites him, yet Kairu cannot help feeling afraid. The young African boy knows the meaning of his name. Black one. When Kairu finally reaches his destination he realizes that the life he knew and loved would never again be the same and soon learns that in life, all things happen for a purpose...’
That portion of the summary does not begin to define the life awaiting Kairu. He is sent to a camp where other boys his age – prepubescent and beautiful – are sold into ‘slavery’, but a slavery of a different sort. Each of the boys undergoes transformation into a eunuch either their entire genitalia are excised or in some case only the testes, arresting their development so that they are neither male nor female. What follows is training for the wealthy lords of Africa or transportation by ship to castles in other lands to be ‘special servants’ to the masters of the destinations.
How Gregory manages this story is masterful in that he never allows the extraordinary situation become the focus, rather just another means of inflicting class inequality (and lack of respect of humanity) to a group of people who are desperate for income – so desperate they would sell their children into situations of this sort.
Other books have broached the subject of human slavery whether historical or contemporary as in the sex traffic that is so ominous today. But none have offered the public the sensitive overview of the effects of this life. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 15
The words jumped off the page and Kairu became a visual warrior that I would follow to the end of the world. Waiting for the next chapter of this fantastic hero!
